Robot AI

AI generated image using the Divi content creation tool

AI is almost impossible to avoid at the moment. From AI chat bots, image and content creation, articles reflecting on the impact to careers (and humanity!) it seems to be making an impact in most day-to-day experiences.
And it seems web design is no different. Although there are examples of AI developed web-design I think the complexities of creating whole websites using AI is still impractical for most people (although we will have to wait and see for how longer). However, using tools to create image and text-based content is very much here. In fact, the main theme we use for our WordPress based web design has now incorporated AI into it’s interface. This is a paid addon but there is a trial period, so I thought I’d use this article to examine how effective it could be in creating content for web design…

Images

We’re obviously approached by a variety of clients and customers who have different needs when it comes to images. Some will have existing images, commissioned photography and have an existing base of images and iconography to call upon. Others will have nothing and a limited budget for image creation. We explained in this previous article about where we can source decent cost-effective or free sources of images. Sometimes we use these in their original format or sometimes they’re used as inspiration to create bespoke images.

AI gives a new opportunity to create a bespoke image suited to the individual, business and theme. We thought we’d test out a few parameters to see how well the AI could cater for our needs:

Examples

In the following examples I’ve tried to pull out some different situations where I might need an image to illustrate a unique industry and style and see how well the AI copes with providing us with something decent to use.

1

Imagined client: Child Welfare Charity
Proposed image: Something that shows the connection between the professionals and the child
Search term: a young child around the age of 4 meeting a social worker or health care professional in an English garden

Results:
0 cdb13a9a 6c26 44e5 859b 85f4d1c474d3

The AI generates 4 images and you can either regenerate or select one image to hone down until you’re happy. I didn’t think was too bad an effort although the overall blurred/fake effect is a little off-putting. Also, a lot of AI errors come about when trying to depict hands and you can see this a little at the bottom of the image.

2

Imagined client: Jeweller
Proposed image: A jeweller at work crafting an intricate item
Search term: Close up of a jeweller working on a pendant using crafting tools

Results:
2 b2267200 c350 43c0 97d7 f9843a2388a4

Again, the hands are problematic as they look like different hands (nail shape). Also, the way the suggested tool is being held is a little odd and the jewellery itself is far from special!

3

Imagined client: Boat Trips
Proposed image: Nice landscape image of the sea and cost in Brighton
Search term: Landscape view from a boat looking back at the Brighton coast in Sussex on a sunny day

Results:
1 2a020ecf b0ee 4b24 9b3b ef6c3c1cc154

It’s quite a nice image but the AI is clearly struggling with the specifics as I’m not sure this is anywhere near Brighton!

4

Imagined client: Telecommunications
Proposed image: Abstract image reflecting the tech industry
Search term: Abstract image showing fibre optics in monochrome colours reflecting the telecommunications industry

Results:
2 4a59b19f f612 45ef 9b25 28e98c78e895

Kind of interesting but I’m not sure this is reflecting tech or fibre optics as the image looks a little too chaotic.

5

 Imagined client: Children’s Art Classes
Proposed image: Art-based image showing strong abstract colours for use in a background
Search term: Abstract art image showing strong colours blending together

Results:
2 31938b8c 5203 4bfe a294 6788524ee404

Quite a good job at reflecting a painterly effect.

6

 Imagined client: Adventure company
Proposed image: Show a vintage car in an iconic Sub-Saharan setting
Search term: Vintage rally car travelling through Kenyan safari countryside

Results:
1 ad375e83 f172 47c6 93b0 990c79b4a56a

I think this is probably the most effective rendition of what I was trying to imagine when providing the description. There are still issues though. There doesn’t seem to be a driver for example!

Conclusion on image creation

Admittedly, these were fairly quick examples. Other than one image, I chose one of the first options provided out of a choice of four. It may be that with better refinement and more time taken the results could be better. However, I don’t think there’s enough evidence here to persuade me that this built in AI tool for images is there yet. I have also used MidJourney is an experimental capacity and the results are a bit more sophisticated (albeit with some of the same anomalies). I think I’ll still be sticking with image libraries for the time being. At the moment too many of the generated results throw up something that’s not quite right and it can be a bit disconcerting (as of August 2023!).

Text-based content creation

Another AI tool that’s been built into the theme is the ability to generate text-based content. I’ll try to test this below to create a few examples:

Is AI the Ultimate Solution for Content Generation? Think Again!

When it comes to web design, creativity, authenticity, and a personal touch are paramount. That’s why relying solely on AI to generate content may not be the best option. Here are five compelling reasons why web designers should think twice before embracing AI for content creation:

1. Authenticity is Irreplaceable:
AI-generated content lacks the genuine human touch that only a skilled web designer can provide. By using AI, you risk losing that unique voice and personality that sets your website apart. Don’t settle for generic, robotic content when you can infuse your own creativity and personalization into every word.

2. A Missed Opportunity for Unleashing Your Creativity:
Web design is an art form that allows designers to unleash their creativity and push boundaries. By solely relying on AI, you limit your own potential for innovation. Don’t let AI stifle your imagination and limit your ability to create truly captivating and unique content.

3. Inconsistencies Can Slip Through the Cracks:
While AI may excel at generating content, it can still have its fair share of quirks and inconsistencies. After all, AI is only as good as the data it’s been trained on. By using AI-generated content, you run the risk of unintentionally including inaccuracies or inconsistencies that can harm your website’s credibility. Stay in control of your content and ensure its quality and accuracy by crafting it yourself.

4. Don’t Underestimate the Power of User Interaction:
Engaging with your audience is crucial in web design. Users appreciate genuine interactions and authentic communication. By relying on AI-generated content, you miss out on the opportunity to truly connect with your visitors. Take the time to understand their needs, listen to their feedback, and create content that engages and resonates with them on a deeper level.

5. Maintaining a Human Touch:
In an increasingly digital world, human connection and relatability are more important than ever. By using AI to generate content, you risk losing that personal touch that creates an emotional connection with your audience. Keep the human element alive in your web design efforts and forge meaningful connections through your own crafted content.

In conclusion, while AI can offer certain advantages in efficiency and optimization, it cannot replace human creativity, authenticity, and the ability to truly connect with your audience. As a web designer, your unique perspective and personal touch are irreplaceable. Embrace your creative power and let your content shine with the human touch that sets your website apart.

Conclusion on text-based content creation

I actually think that the text generation tool has more to offer at this stage than the image creation. This might be because I’m probably more of a visual person and may benefit more from the assistance AI generated text can provide. I do think it can offer a good base for creating text-based content. Without the budget to employ writers and communications experts, I can see the tool being beneficial to many of my clients who struggle to articulate ideas about themselves and their businesses.

However, I guess the ultimate test should be left to the AI generator and it’s ability to create a joke. Here goes:

Why did the robot go on a diet? Because it had too many bytes! Keep smiling and let AI bring laughter to your day!

Hmmmm…
